The PRINCE2 Process Model Diagram

The PRINCE2 Process Model Diagram

I recommend that you down load and print out the full PRINCE2 procedure model diagram in color (A4 landscape) and refer to it while reading this Blog.

Due to the manner the process model is usually presented, you will agree with me that is difficult to see that some processes are finished more than once. This just makes getting to know PRINCE2 more tough as you try to figure out relationship among the different processes. I have therefore introduce some colour notation to ease your understanding.

Items coloured with blue are executed once in a project (e.g.: Starting up the Project (SU), Initiating a Project (IP), creating the Project Initiation Documents, creating a Project Plan and Closing the Project.

Items coloured with green are executed once for each stage (e.g.: Controlling a Stage (CS) and Managing Stage Boundaries (SB)). So if a project  has four stages after startup, then the items in green are executed four times. It should be noted that at the final stage after all products have been delivered, the closing a project process follows the controlling a stage process. Thus; Managing a Stage Boundary is not done at the very end of the final stage of a project.

Items coloured with orange can be executed multiple times in a stage (e.g.: The Project Board might request that a highlight report should be sent each week during a stage by the Project Manager). And Guidance and Instructions can come from the Project Board to the Project Manager at any time.

Items coloured with dark red can be implemented multiple times during a stage (e.g.: Work packages can be given to a number of Team Managers by the Project Manager). A Team Plan can be created for each Work Package.
